Fourth Wall Jokes are gags in the series where the characters of the show will acknowledge that they are in a TV series. This has been done many times in Rick and Morty, although most of the jokes are subtle references as opposed to straight-out fourth wall breaking jokes.

Season 1[]

Pilot[]

  • Rick was seen talking to Morty about all the adventures that they would be going on in the future and mentioned "www.RickandMorty.com" which redirects to the official show page on the Adult Swim website.

Lawnmower Dog[]

  • When Snowball and the other dogs left and went to another dimension, Rick and Morty talked about what their world would be like if their species ruled the world. When talking about it, they talked in ta way people would discuss about a TV show or movie. This is a reference to Dog World, a proposed pilot for a Cartoon Network TV series made by co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon.

Anatomy Park[]

  • Just before credits, with the family around the living room with their digital gadgets, Rick says, "Are you people even human? What kind of Christmas is this?" at which point Jerry looks up from his iPad. Jerry looks through the fourth wall and shrugs his shoulders with an amiable smile.

Meeseeks and Destroy[]

  • At the end of the episode, Rick turned to the camera and bid a goodbye to the viewers.

Raising Gazorpazorp[]

  • When Rick and Summer saw the giant head drop of the Gwendolyns to the male Gazorpazorps, Rick says "The plot thickens."
  • After Rick is released, he hits the ground and says "What's the opposite of 'Wubba lubba dub dub'? am I right, ladies and gentlemen?"
  • At the end of the episode, Rick turned to the camera and bided the audience goodbye while the rest of the family joined him waving goodbye.

Rixty Minutes[]

  • When watching the Interdimensional Cable, Morty says that television in other dimensions is more laid back and less stressed than on Earth. Rick agrees with him, saying that the shows that they're watching are "Almost entirely improvisational". This was a reference to how most of the TV shows made for this episode were ad-libbed by the creators.

Ricksy Business[]

S1finale goodbye
  • At the end of the episode, Rick, Morty, and Summer start dancing and then Rick tells the audience, "That was season one! Thanks for watching!"

Season 2[]

Total Rickall[]

  • When the room becomes completely infested with the alien parasite characters, Rick turns to the audience, telling them that from their camera angle, which was a birds-eye view shot, it looked like a Where's Waldo page. He then jokingly asked them to find him in the group of a bunch of zany characters and then told them that they'll be back after the commercial break.
  • During Rick's memory with the plan concerning Nintendo 3DS's, after Rick leaves the room, he sticks his head back in and says "Nintendo, give me free stuff."
  • After Rick says "lick, lick, lick my balls", he goes to the camera and tells the audience that he says it all the time.

Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate[]

  • When Rick plugged the Interdimensional Cable into the wall, one of the doctors asked him what he was doing and he told her that it was a sequel, but he wasn't sure why since they'd "pretty much nailed it the first time". This was a reference to how this episode was continuing the theme from the episode, Rixty Minutes.
  • When Rick turned on the TV, the title of the episode appeared on screen, carved in stone, while a bunch of bikini models slapped their asses on it.

Look Who's Purging Now[]

  • Rick reminded Morty of the Yummy' Yums candy bars, telling him that they were introduced in the first act of the same episode.

The Wedding Squanchers[]

  • At the end of the episode, Mr. Poopybutthole was seen watching the ending credits of the episode and then began talking to the audience of the show, reminding them of the episode he came from and it's events, and then started harassing the pizza man, talking about the ending of the episode. In the end, he told the viewers to tune into Season 3, which would happen in about a year and a half.

Season 3[]

The Rickshank Rickdemption[]

  • At the end of the episode, Rick yells at Morty, saying that he will get his McDonald's Szechuan sauce, even if it takes him nine seasons.

Rickmancing the Stone[]

  • Right after Morty pulls the crystal out of Rick's pocket, Rick looks at the camera and says, "We'll be right back," referencing the commercial break.

The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy[]

  • At the beginning of the episode, when Rick is taking Jerry from his apartment, he yells out "Rick and Jerry episode!"

Morty's Mind Blowers[]

  • Rick breaks the fourth wall by turning to the camera and telling the audience that the episode would take the place of the Season 3 Interdimensional Cable.

The Rickchurian Mortydate[]

  • Beth mentions that the future will be more "like Season 1" after they return home at the end of the episode.
  • At the end of the episode, Mr. Poopybutthole speaks to the audience. He apologizes for not showing up but explains it is due to him getting married and having a baby. He then says goodbye until Season 4 in "a really long time".

Season 4[]

Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat[]

  • Rick mentions that he had cut his cloning system off "seasons ago" when encountering Fascist Rick in the Fascist Dystopian Universe, referencing the episode, "Big Trouble in Little Sanchez".
  • After Morty is forgiven for his actions at the courthouse, a news reporter says how "As far as continuity goes, the reset button's been hit."
  • Rick and Morty talk about how their adventures are going to go at the end of the episode similar to the Pilot episode.
  • Rick tells Summer she has ruined the "Season 4 premiere" at the end of the episode.

Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim's Morty[]

  • Rick says, "And that's the end of the Morty gets a dragon episode", after he is nearly killed by Balthromaw's flame breath.

Never Ricking Morty[]

  • Rick explains to Morty how the story train is "a literal story device for an anthology" after the two identify each other and remove their disguises.
  • Rick uses a "continuity explosion" to find the map of the story train.
  • The story train map is a reference to series co-creator Dan Harmon's "Story Circle" process of writing which is used in Rick and Morty.
  • Rick mentions to Morty how they are going into an "act break" before the first commercial break starts.
  • Rick mentions the "Bechdel test" to Morty and tells him to tell a story using it. Morty tells a story which parodies the Bechdel effect within the episode about Beth and Summer.
  • Story Lord tells Rick and Morty how he will use their "story potential" to power the train taking it beyond the "fifth wall". Furthermore, Rick mentions that their "story potential" isn't limitless and that he will never break the fifth wall.
  • Story Lord fights Rick and Morty and uses them with his machine, taking Rick and Morty in and out of the canon of the episode in different realities and scenarios. Furthermore, Morty mentions if any of it was "canon" with Rick replying, "It could've been."
  • Story Lord's machine has labels such as "Story Potential", "Narrative Energy", "Broad Appeal", "Reliability", and "Marketability".
    • However, there is no "Quality" label on the machine.
  • Rick and Morty use a literal "Deus ex machina" to escape back onto the story train and strand Story Lord in "every writer's hell: the Bible", which is mentioned by Rick.

Promortyus[]

  • At the end of the episode, Rick mentions how them defacing on the floor is a "full circle from the pilot". This is a reference to the Pilot episode, in which Rick had Morty shove seeds up his rectum and how Rick and Morty believed they were laying eggs at the end of "Promortyus".

The Vat of Acid Episode[]

  • Rick makes a statement that he doesn't believe in time travel after Morty arrives back in the garage after using the save point device. This is a reference to Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon's statement that time travel would not be used in the series (despite the episode, "Rattlestar Ricklactica", heavily using time travel as a part of its plot).

Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri[]

  • Morty and Summer mention that working together is their "arc" before Rick fights Tammy. They mention it again when they travel to the Galactic Federation ship.

Mort Dinner Rick Andre[]

  • Mr. Nimbus starts talking about how if "Diane" were still alive she would be disappointed with what Rick has become. Rick desperately tries to stop him from establishing a "canonical backstory" for him.
  • After Rick, Morty, and Jessica are captured the Narnia dimension, Rick tells Morty how he will "Deus Ex Machina" himself and the latter two out of the situation and leave the dimension.
  • Jessica spends an indeterminate though lengthy period of time frozen in a conscious cryostasis during the episode. During so, one of her lines, "Was I just the object in another story? Is that all I ever was? Could I be more?" is a comical meta-reference to the fact that the inclusion of Jessica's character in the show revolves entirely around her position as Morty's crush, which is a common trope in television and media.

Mortyplicity[]

  • When a decoy Rick and Morty are talking about decoy families, Rick says how the concept is a comedic mislead for a "special episode".

Rick & Morty's Thanksploitation Spectacular[]

  • Rick mentions how many years have passed since he first moved in with his family but avoids giving a specific number. It is a nod to how the show uses a floating timeline, a fictional device where "years" go by without characters increasing in age.

Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort[]

  • Rick directly references the episode "Pickle Rick" in the beginning of the episode, likely comparing it to the possibility of a popular episode, or a better one without the family having too much relevance.

  • When Morty mentions that he got a serum from the Citadel, Rick says how they're getting the ground running with a "Citadel episode".
  • When Rick and Morty are asked to attend dinner with President Morty, Rick refuses at first saying how he wanted to go back to simpler adventures and that "the Citadel runs on canon".
  • At the dinner with President Morty, Rick mentions how he doesn't like "serialized drama" and President Morty agrees, wanting to keep it "episodic".
  • When President Morty reveals that he scanned Rick's brain in the past, the episode freezes and Stan Lee Rick appears to "tell the viewer to check out Season 1, episode 9" before leaving as the episode resumes.
  • When Rick tries to shoot President Morty a second time, Rick says how he did it to "express disapproval of his dialogue".
  • When Rick and Morty escape, President Morty says how the "quality of dialogue will stop mattering" and how he will put his plan into fruition.
  • When Morty demands to hear the truth from Rick, Rick gives him a download of all of his memories, ranting that Morty wants to "jump the shark" and learn about his "stupid crybaby backstory".
  • After the backstory sequence, Morty mutters "dead wife" when waking up and Rick says how "everyone can now shut up about it", referencing the fan demand of his backstory.
  • At the end of the episode, Mr. Poopybutthole speaks to the audience about how he messed up his life.

Solaricks[]

Juricksic Mort[]

  • When the dinosaurs ask to fix the rift, Rick refuses as he knows how to fix it and it is very “canonical”.
  • When the dinosaurs fix the rift, Rick mentions how it was "canonical" and he could've milked it for a "season" or a "three-episode long arc" at least.
  • At the end of the episode, Rick looks at the fourth wall and yells about "classic episodes" along with "social commentary" and "crude characters".

Full Meta Jackrick[]

  • At the beginning of the episode, Rick realizes and tells Morty that they are stuck in a “previously on” spiral.
  • After grabbing onto Previous Leon, Morty questions and Rick comments on the scenes as they travel through the opening sequence.
  • Rick mentions how the episode doesn’t have a “likable premise” and how meta jokes are only funny when “he does a little nod to the viewers”. Morty afterwards questions Rick mentioning the existence of the “viewers”.
