Gene is the next door neighbor of the Smith Family. He first appeared in "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy".
Biography[]
The Gene from the Prime Dimension (if he exists there) presumably became a Cronenberg.
After her boyfriend Ethan breaks up with her, Summer attempts to transform herself to be more beautiful with disastrous results. She gets blown madly out of proportion, destroying the garage and leading to a loud and heated argument between Beth and Morty. Overhearing the fight, Gene is concerned and asks if everything is okay. Morty angrily and rudely tells him to mind his own goddamn business, and Gene politely and silently walks away, without batting an eye. Gene is mentioned again in "Rickdependence Spray" when Rick is driving to escape Morty's sperm but he runs over Gene's body, who likely died from the sperm. Despite it, Gene is mentioned in Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion as a possible member of the team, implying that Gene either survived previous events or Rick mistook someone else for Gene during them.
His survival is confirmed in "Rickternal Friendshine of the Spotless Mort", where he stumbles upon the garage while Rick is exploring Birdperson's mind. The garage's AI promptly tries to get him to give it a power source so it can get its own body, even offering sexual favors in exchange. Gene later shows up when Rick regains consciousness with some power supplies for the garage, only for the panicked garage to tell him off.
Gene is presumably infected and killed by Mr. Frundles in Dimension C-131.
The Parmesan dimension Gene is first seen in "Night Family" where he is walking his dog at night. When Morty accidentally blows up the space cruiser, Gene asks if the Smith Family needs help, to which Rick dismisses him. He is later seen watering his plants when Beth accidentally drives through them, narrowly missing Gene. He then asks why he even bothers.
Starting with Season 7, Gene has been appearing more often, now getting more involved with the Smith family, especially Rick. In the episode, "How Poopy Got His Poop Back", Gene is recruited by Rick and his friends in order to help him stage an intervention for Mr. Poopybutthole but they all decide to party instead. Rick and his friends meet Hugh Jackman as Gene mentions how he is his cousin-in-law as Hugh invites them to his house and do drugs. Gene is then seen participating in Mr. Poopybutthole and Hugh's scheme of winning back Amy by wooing her with a song. After her husband, Gul'Karna, attacks them, Gene participates in the fight but Mr. Poopybutthole stops Rick and his friends from hurting them. At the end of the episode, Gene arrives buying the Best Buds Burrito Box at the Taco Tambourine which requires proof of friendship and one of the workers taking it away from him as Rick and his friends disappear using fading pills.
In the episode, "The Jerrick Trap", Jerry asks for Rick's help when asking how his rake is missing and he believes that Gene, who burrowed the rake previously, is lying about not having it as the two swap minds in their argument. Later, Gene gives back the rake to them, now fused as Jerricky, and admits that he had it all along because he just wanted to be noticed. Ironically because he returned the rake, Gene inadvertently helped restore Rick and Jerry back to normal as Jerricky soon stepped on the rake, hitting both of their faces and unmerging their memories allowing the rest of the family to separate them.
Gene appears in "The CuRicksous Case of Bethjamin Button" when Beth and Space Beth break into his house after regressing themselves to the age of 10. Gene very quickly deduces that the two of them are younger versions of Beth Sanchez and her clone and shows little worry for their intent to lure him into a booby-trap. The two insult Gene for his hospitality and past divorce, which he mostly brushes off and leaves to make them hot cocoa, despite their protest. The two Beths subsequently ambush Gene and stab him, before fighting and accidentally starting a fire. Gene attempts to call 911, but accidentally degloves his hand in the process. Gene eventually escapes his burning home and finds Rick Sanchez outside, who restores his hand and extinguishes the fire while also bribing the firefighters so that the incident is kept off tabs. Later on, Beth and Space Beth, now back to their current ages, apologize and repair the damage to his kitchen. Sometime later Rick's cell phone is blowing up with voicemails from Gene to 911 about the various incidents at the Smith residence while wondering why does the number have answering machines in the first place.
Appearance[]
Gene is a bespectacled thin Caucasian man with receding brown hair. He wears a fishing hat with a hook fastened and a marsh vest with an orange shirt underneath, dark tan cargo shorts and white socks with slippers.
Personality[]
Gene is a kind, mild-mannered, every day, average Joe. In spite of his neighborly nature, he is considered a nosy neighbor, and is yelled and cursed at, when just showing care or offering help to his neighbors. Living next door to him for a long, he has presumably grown used to Rick's strange inventions and their outcomes, not acting shocked by any of the weird happenings, (i.e. Summer rapidly growing to massive proportions), and actually shows more concern in the well-being of his neighbors, seeing their unhappiness as a bigger issue than any chaotic, off-the-charts destruction and mayhem, that comes from Rick's garage. He is even willing to tolerate property damage caused by Rick and Morty's adventures such as the cracking of his house's foundation after the Smiths' house was accidentally transported to and from the Testicle Monster Dimension.
In later episodes of the show, it is revealed that he desperately wants attention from the Smith Family and to be included in their misadventures and lives as he admits that he lied about stealing Jerry's rake in order for Jerry to acknowledge him.
In "The CuRicksous Case of Bethjamin Button", Gene demonstrates a great understanding of the Smith Family's strange habits and adventures. When Beth and Space Beth break into his house, he is incredibly nonchalant about it and quickly figures out how the two of them got to this point. He is also able to guess that they are trying to trick him into sitting in a booby-trapped chair and brushes it off, instead offering to make them hot cocoa. Later on, Gene continues to react very nonchalantly about the situation, even as his house is on fire and his hand is accidentally degloved. When Rick arrives, heals Gene and saves his home, he tells Rick that the Beths are "monsters", but quickly forgives them, however, when they return to repair his home and shares wine with them once the work is complete.
In the post-credits scene of the same episode, Gene's attempted calls to the police (which are intercepted by Rick) are played out. In them, Gene can be heard casually reporting extraordinary circumstances, once again showing his attitude towards the Smith Family's unusual activities. He apparently also doesn't question anything too much, as he ponders why the "police" would even have an answering machine, yet still continues to leave messages.

Trivia[]
- In Valkyrick, Space Beth's contacts include one for "Douglugg (Neighbor)". This could be Gene's last name, but is very highly unlikely as Space Beth likely has new neighbors in space, and it could be the name of the neighbor in the home right of the Smith Residence.
- When scanned by the mind-shuffled Rick and Jerry in "The Jerrick Trap", Gene is shown to be 0.01% alike to Jerry's rake.
