Rick traps Morty and Summer into his Matrix Simulation for a long period of time after they steal his phone charger. Within the simulation, Morty is sent to prison for 17 years after breaking a window and stealing a random object from a store to get Rick’s attention. After getting out unsuccessful at his new life and going to a bar, Morty becomes friends with a man named CJ and becomes a fireman. When watching a broadcast of a terrorist chopping a charging cable, Matrix Morty and his friends at the fire station become enraged and sign up to join a war.
Morty fights within the Lithium War in another country while all of his friends, CJ, 8-Ball, Chop Block, and Marmaduke died within it. Matrix Morty then dies in battle but respawns in the same location a few moments later realizing that he is immortal within the simulation. Matrix Morty then uses his immortality to make incredibly risky moves to win the war and kill the enemy leader. After the events of the Lithium War, Morty decides to live in the woods with his dogs before meeting Matrix Summer and being freed from the simulation to her device crashing the simulation.
After escaping the simulation, Matrix Morty is horrified and traumatized from the experience while having PTSD and flashbacks. Matrix Morty bonds with Rick when fixing Rick’s Death Race but knocks him out and sends him into the Matrix Simulation after Rick casually lets Beth borrow his charger despite living a simulation about protecting phone chargers. Matrix Morty then steals and uses the car to travel to Power Plant Valley and destroy the central nuclear plant until Matrix Summer convinces him to stop his plan.
Matrix Morty and Summer beat up a nuclear scientist as they believe that they are stuck in another Matrix simulation until Rick clarifies that he did not do so. Matrix Morty decides to get a tattoo of a charging table as a reminder of the life and people he lost within the Matrix simulation. Rick finally resets Morty’s mind to normal as Morty forgets about his Matrix experiences and freaks out about having a tattoo on his arm. However, Rick refuses to remove it as Matrix Morty would not want it removed.
