Season 7 is the seventh season of Rick and Morty. It premiered on October 15, 2023 and ended on December 17[1]. It contained 10 episodes,[2] which was on par with most previous seasons.
However, in contrast to previous seasons, this season was the first not to feature co-creator Justin Roiland. Roiland's roles were recast with Ian Cardoni as Rick and Harry Belden as Morty starting with this season.[3]
Production[]
On May 10, 2018, Adult Swim announced that the series was renewed for 70 additional episodes as apart of a long-term deal with co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, which renewed the series for a seventh season.[4]
During the Rick and Morty Adult Swim Con 2020 panel, Dan Harmon mentioned that Season 7 was in development around the same time that Season 5's premiere released and writing had begun. [5]
On August 6, 2021, writer Cody Ziglar revealed that writing for Season 7 has finished. [6]
On February 23, 2022, the production workers of Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites filed a petition for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board in a bid to join The Animated Guild.[7]
On January 24, 2023, Adult Swim ended its association with co-creator Justin Roiland and fired him from the series amid charges of domestic abuse. It was announced that Roiland's roles will be recast for future seasons of Rick and Morty. The series is planned to continue to a tenth season.[8]
On June 14, 2023, Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen and executive producer Steve Levy revealed that recasting Roiland’s roles are in progress and Season 7 is expected to release within Fall 2023.[9]
On July 21, 2023, at the Rick and Morty San Diego Comic Con panel, it was announced that Roiland's voice work would be replaced by soundalike actors and there will be no changes to the characters themselves. A sneak peek of the episode "Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie" was shown during the panel.[10]
On August 24, 2023, Adult Swim announced that the seventh season will premiere on October 15, 2023 and consist of 10 episodes. [11]
On August 31, 2023, Adult Swim announced the titles of the episodes within the season and that the season will air all episodes weekly, having no hiatuses or breaks in contrast to previous seasons. [12] [13]
On September 6, 2023, Adult Swim released a promo called "Summer and Beth's Season 7 Annoucement" for the season on their YouTube channel, which featured Summer and Beth. [14]
On September 18, 2023, Adult Swim posted the opening titles sequence for the season on their YouTube channel.[15]
On September 21st, 2023, Adult Swim announced that the trailer for the season would be releasing on the following Monday. [16]
On September 25th, 2023, Adult Swim posted the trailer for the season on their YouTube channel, which revealed the new voices for Rick and Morty.[17] The names of the new voice actors were not revealed until the season premiered.[18]
On October 15th, 2023, the first episode of the season, "How Poopy Got His Poop Back", premiered on Adult Swim. Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden were revealed as the new voice actors for Rick and Morty respectively, along with Jon Allen as the new voice actor for Mr. Poopybutthole. [19][20]
On December 19, 2023, Adult Swim announced that the season would stream on Max and Hulu on January 22nd.
On January 8th, 2024, it was announced that Season 7 would release on Blu-Ray and DVD on March 12th.[21]
